Stamford Cradle to Career Partners with Schools on Summer School Program
After more than a year of staring at screens and disrupted school schedules, Stamford students in kindergarten through grade eight were able to attend a free, full-day program that offered in-person academic instruction in the morning and fun, enriching activities in the afternoon, during the summer of 2021.
Stamford Public Schools and Stamford Cradle to Career worked together with community providers to make it happen. It was the largest ever summer program offered in Stamford, with approximately 1,800 students participating. Stamford community partners worked together to make good use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to provide resources for this program.
After catching up on academic learning, students were given the opportunity to take advantage of a variety of activities, from music, to sports, to coding. Five agencies were funded to provide enhancement services, such as weekend food, early intervention services, and social/emotional supports.
Many lower-income Stamford students would not have had the opportunity to participate in these academic and enrichment activities without this program.
"Because we had strong community partnerships in place, we were able to put all the pieces together quickly to create a great summer for Stamford's children," said Bridget Fox, president of Stamford Cradle to Career.
